Our region is getting too hot to handle, according to new research by the Climate Council.
The Council’s Heat Map reveals Port Augusta is set to experience 62 days above 35 degrees by 2090 – an increase of 20 days per year if we continue existing actions to tackle climate change.
Similarly, Whyalla is set to experience 43 days above 35 degrees – an increase of 15 days per year, and Port Pirie is set to experience 53 days above 35 degrees – an increase of 17 days per year.
The Council’s Head of Research, Doctor Simon Bradshaw, says the choices we make today will affect our tomorrow.
“In many cases, people in regional and rural communities already face higher temperatures than those in the cities, Doctor Bradshaw says.
“Put simply, climate pollution threatens to compound and widen existing inequalities between our cities and our rural and regional parts of the country.”
