Local teenagers with a passion for environment and sustainability can apply for a place on Green Adelaide’s Youth Environment Council.
The annual South Australian program boosts environmental knowledge and leadership skills through a camp, workshops, online forums, and support with an end-of-year project.
Green Adelaide’s Team Leader for Nature and Education Christy Spier says it’s a great opportunity for young regional residents to connect with like-minded individuals in the metro.
“The Youth Environment Council is for the whole of South Australia, and so part of that support and funding that comes from Green Adelaide is to support regional students to come to the Council, Ms Spier says.
“There’s provisions for air flights and travel, and support to get you in and out of the city and to the national parks and where you need to go.
“We definitely encourage regional applicants, and the application can take you 10 to 15 minutes if you’re already active in your school.”
One success story from the program is that of Eyre Peninsula local, Keira.
“Keira was involved in 2019, and then after that she went on to actually get a Grassroots Grant through her local Landscape Board to help protect local marine life at Lipson Cove.
“She was really passionate about three local species there – the bottlenose dolphin, the little penguins, and the white-bellied sea eagle – and she designed a sign showcasing all the information about that species.”
Applications are open until 29 February, and are open to students aged 11-17.
