A local man was named the ‘Lions Club of the City of Adelaide and SAPOL 2023 Citizen of the Year’ for his quick thinking and fearlessness.
On 3 May, 2023, Malcolm Hammond was going about his normal work day, returning from his lunch break, when he noticed two police cars enter his street.
Shortly afterward, he received a phone call from his wife who reported hearing “two loud bangs”, and he returned to investigate.
Turning into the street, Mr Hammond was confronted with a distressing scene and, without hesitation, administered crucial first aid to officers Brevet Sergeant Ian Todd and Constable Jordan Allely, who both had critical injuries.
Mr Hammond was presented with the award yesterday morning, 7 March, at Police Headquarters.
He says the emergency services who attended the scene, and his wife, Kerri, are just as deserving of the title.
