Port Pirie Regional Council partnered with the Rotary Club of Port Pirie to recycle old playgrounds that don’t meet Australian standards.
The old playgrounds at Tennyson Park, Plenty Street and Spencer Estate have been replaced and will be sent to developing countries.
The Council’s Director of Infrastructure Catherine Johnson says Rotary volunteers manage the process.
“It actually works out to be a more cost-effective process for Council to remove the playground working with Rotary than actually throwing them out, Ms Johnson says.
“It’s just a really good opportunity for us to do something good with something that would normally be a waste product.”
The Rotary Overseas Relocated Playgrounds project has sent over 350 playgrounds to nations like Fiji, Uganda, Sri Lanka, Timor Leste, Nepal, the Philippines, and Tanzania.
