November 15 each year is Steve Irwin Day, where the life of the legendary Wildlife Warrior and Crocodile Hunter is celebrated across the world, but especially here in Australia of course.
Steve’s remembered for his passion and enthusiasm for wildlife conservation, a legacy that lives on with his family.
The date of November 15 was chosen because it’s the birthday of Steve’s favourite animal, Harriet the Galapagos tortoise, who lived to be an incredible 175 years old.
Steve Irwin Day has been an annual event since 2007, one year after Steve’s tragic death from a stingray injury while filming a documentary on the Great Barrier Reef.
The day invites people to wear their khakis in honour of Steve and is a celebration of his legacy while also aiming to raise money for Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors to help continue Steve’s conservation work.
This year’s Steve Irwin Day event at Australia Zoo includes the Irwin family feeding crocodiles at the Wildlife Warriors Show, a live chalk painting mural of Steve, special performances by the Gubbi Gubbi with Welcome to Country, and the ‘OG’ Wiggles – Anthony Field, Murray Cook, Jeff Fatt and Greg Page – performing some of their favourite hits.
The ‘OG’ Wiggles will also be inducted into the Australia Zoo Walk of Fame during the day’s celebrations.
